April 2024
Work on the new washroom enlargement and remodeling project on the north-east corner of the Balfour Chapel is nearly completed. As part of the Phase 2 rejuvenation plan, the old washroom was demolished last fall to allow for the construction of a new structure. When the old joists were exposed, the extent of water damage and rot was far more pervasive than anticipated. New footings were added to level the floor, which had sunk and allowed water to pool. The new structure, which is 7 feet x 8 feet, is now framed in and watertight. Inside, the walls have been dry walled and a new flush toilet (first one in the 132-year history of the chapel!) and a sink have been installed. Although small in size, the new addition will be wheelchair accessible and will have a few amenities and a little storage. New linoleum flooring, installation of safety grab bars, a tankless water heater, and freshly painted walls will round out the finishing touches.
Completion of the upgraded washroom will enable the Balfour and District Business and Historical Association to take another step forward in making the Chapel a user-friendly performing arts venue for the community. Long overdue, this renovation will bring the Chapel’s functionality into the hands of the next generation. The project was funded by a loving Christian donation.
